Iquitos was founded in 1757 as the first port along the Amazon River, and has since evolved into the most important city developed on the banks of the River. Traveling to Iquitos
Surrounded by rivers and the rainforest, the city is impossible to reach by road; thus waterways and airways offer the only access to the city. The quickest and most direct way to reach Iquitos is to catch a flight from Lima, as planes leave frequently from Peru's Capital. One can also find flights from other areas such as Tarapota, Pucallpa and Yurimaguas, but these flights tend to be more sporadic and not as routine.
