Iquitos Overview

The largest, yet isolated city in the Peruvian Amazonia, Iquitos serves as the gateway to the Amazon and the urban heart of the Peruvian Amazon department. Iquitos is the capital city of the Peruvian Amazonia, and the only city in the Amazon that has an airport, which guarantees that visitors to the Amazon will spend some time in Peru's "party city." The people of Iquitos tend to be relaxed, friendly and very laid back, using large gatherings and parades as a typical city event.

Serving as a hub for all foreign visitors to the Amazon, Iquitos serves as the perfect cross between the busy humdrum of American city life and the remote, yet picturesque scenery and atmosphere of an isolated world.

Using Iquitos as mainly a starting point for any excursion of visit to the rainforest, let AR tourism help you book your stay to avoid run-down jungle lodges and unadventurous tours. A true city in population and urbanization, Iquitos serves as the last city-like connection offering authentic dining, ATM's, and lively nightlife filled with discothèques and bars before heading out into the dense wilderness of the Amazon.

Iquitos history
Iquitos was founded in 1757 as the first port along the Amazon River, and has since evolved into the most important city developed on the banks of the River. It serves as the capital city of the Peruvian Amazonia, covered with extravagant and awe-striking greenness as well as a cultural richness in the surrounding native communities. Named after the vanished Iquitos Indians, this Jesuit founded city offers more than just natural beauty, but a beautiful display architecture, featuring imported structures from Europe made of ironwork and wall tiles that decorate the buildings though the Plaza de Armas located in downtown Iquitos.

Traveling to Iquitos
Surrounded by rivers and the rainforest, the city is impossible to reach by road; thus waterways and airways offer the only access to the city. The quickest and most direct way to reach Iquitos is to catch a flight from Lima, as planes leave frequently from Peru's Capital. One can also find flights from other areas such as Tarapota, Pucallpa and Yurimaguas, but these flights tend to be more sporadic and not as routine.
