Arequipa Overview

Situated in the heart of canyon country, Arequipa is a fun town in itself with its laid-back atmosphere and close proximity to scores of outdoor adventures. Although most travelers use Arequipa as a place to acclimate to the high altitude before setting off on excursions, the town has enough highlights that warrant a longer visit. The nearby Canyon country is also ideal for adventurous souls. Close by Peru's second longest city are many remote villages and trails less traveled.

Arequipa Highlights
While in Arequipa, the Inca mummies resting in the Museo Santury are definitely worth a visit, as well as the spooky hidden passageways of the Monastario de Santa Catalina. There are also many opportunities for feasting and partying on the Calle San Francisco north of the Plaza de Armas. Outside of the city you can climb the misty summit of the El Misti or trek to waterfalls, rural villages, and hot springs that surround Colca Canyon.

Arequipa History
Unfortunately, Arequipa has been the victim of several natural disasters. In fact, in 1600, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions totally destroyed the city. It was rebuilt and later rocked by more earthquakes, most recently in 2001. Even though these disasters occured, evidence of pre-Inca settlements was discovered and it is believed that the Aymara people from the Lake Titicaca region lived in this region.

Getting to Arequipa
There are several airlines that have daily flights from Lima and Cusco. Once in Arequipa you also have the option to take flights or buses to all the sightseeing spots in canyon country. There are also long distance bus services, which take about 14 hours from Lima and 8 hours from Cusco.
