The Santa Cruz Ulta Trek
This 6-day hike is ideal for the more experienced trekker who wants a shorter trek or who wants to warm up for an intensive climbing trip. It is an extension to the traditional Santa Cruz Trek, with the level being medium/hard. The trail begins at Quebrada Huaripampa and ends at Quebrada Ulta, which is close by Huascaran Mountain. The altitude ranges from 4850m at Punta Yanayacu pass to 3600m at Molinopampa.
Day 1: The trek begins at Cashapampa where hikers will continue for 5 or 6 hours to reach campsite Llamacorral (3800m), where camp will be set for the night.
Day 2: In the morning the trail will continue for 2 hours to Ichiccocho and Jatuncocha Lakes. After visiting the lakes there will be a 1-hour climb to Base Camp Alpamayo where trekkers can enjoy the beautiful views of the Alapamayo, Quitaraju Mountains, and the south side peaks of Artesonraju, Paron, and Aguja.
Day 3: The third day begins with a 4-hour hike to Punta Union pass (4750m) where hikers will stop for lunch and to enjoy the beautiful views of the nearby peaks and turquoise lakes. Then hikers will trek for 3 hours to campsite Cachinapampa (3800m).
Day 4: The trail continues for 2 hours to arrive at Colcabamba Village where hikers can find a good place to have lunch. Then the hikers will continue the ascent to the campsite of Molinopampa (3600m).
Day 5: Today is a 3-hour hike to the Punta Yanayacu pass (4850m) where trekkers can rest and enjoy the spectacular mountain views of Contrahierva, Huascaran, Checyaraju, Sacsha, and many others. Then the trail continues for 3 hours to reach the campsite at Yanayacu Lake (4500m).
Day 6: The last leg of the journey is to through the Ulta Valley and finally to Cruzepampa, where trekkers will be transported back to Huarez.
