Cordillera Blanca Overview
This massive and towering mountain range is one of the most spectacular sights of nature in all of Peru. In fact, it contains the Huascaran, the highest peak in the Peruvian Andes. Although the glaciers are receding every year, it is still possible to see snowy-peaks from anywhere in the Valley of the Callejon de Huaylas.
Cordillera Blanca Treks
With many well-traveled treks and routes along the mountainside, or past a turquoise lake or vast green field, the Cordillera Blanca is a mountain hiker's paradise. Although some trekkers are serious with advanced skills, there are many treks that are great for families or as a warm-up to more difficult routes.
Cordillera Blanca Ancient Remains
The beautiful mountain scenery isn't the only thing that attracts hikers. There are several important ancient remains, some that are even pre-Inca, such as Chavin, which are the oldest ruins in the Americas. Another fascinating site is the small pre-Inca ruin of Wilcahuan. This three-storied structure had a sophisticated ventilation system and skillful stone craftsmanship.
Cordillera Blanca Hot Springs
After a rigorous trek through the mountains a hot soak would be lovely. The village of Monterey, just a few miles from Huarez offers two warm pools and private bathes. Further up the valley the Chancos Village claims to have its own fountain of youth; several natural saunas and pools of warm, steamy water.
Huarez
This mountain serves as a base camp for Cordillera Blanca mountain trekking excursions and provides easy access to everything a traveler needs, making it a convenient place to start a trek. Many treks begin in Huarez after a few days spent acclimating to the altitude.
