Important Streets in Cusco
One of the first things visitors notice are the ancient and dramatic Inca walls that dominate the streets of Cuzco. These amazing constructions of gigantic granite blocks are carved to fit perfectly together and have outlasted the colonial architecture built around the ancient empire. The highlights of the city can be found wandering down several important streets that are detailed below.
Calle Hatun Rumiyoc
Calle Hatun Rumiyoc is two blocks away from the main square (Plaza de Armas) on the way to another one of Cusco's main attractions, the San Blas Neighborhood. This street is by far the most known street in the city and was formerly the home of the Inca Roca. When walking down this street, you will see the famous 12-angled stone, which is fit amazingly into the center of the wall. If you look close enough you'll see a series of stones depicting the shape of a puma, including its head, paws, and tail.
Further on you'll come to the Sieta Culebras (Seven Snakes), the alleyway connecting Plaza Nazarenas to Choquechaca. This small passageway contains the stones that made up the foundation of the chapel in the Hotel Monasterio. Other streets containing Inca foundations are Herrajes, Pasaje Arequipa, and Santa Catalina Angosta.
Calle Loreto
Just east of the Plaza de Armas is Calle Loreto, another well-known Inca street. The huge wall on the left side was once part of the Accllahuasi, "House of Chosen Maidens," who were the emperor's Virgins of the Sun. This is the most distinguished and oldest of the Inca walls in Cuzco.
Ave. el Sol
This is the main street in the city that cuts through the center and leads to the Plaza de Armas. Banks, tourist offices, hotels, bars, and restaurants are plentiful in this centrally located area. Just before reaching the Plaza you'll find the Museo de Historia Natural on the right as well as several notable churches.
Cuesta San Blas
This street is located in San Blas, one of the most beautiful and charming barrios in the city. From here you can weave through crooked alleyways and get great views of the city at one of the many street side cafes.
Manatas and Triufuno
If you continue traveling northwest on Cuesta San Blas it will turn into Triufuno and Manatas streets, which are close to a few important churches, the cathedral, and the Plaza de Armas. You'll also find several hotels, restaurants and cafes along the way.
