Transportation
Due to its location in southern Peru and cultural importance in Peruvian history, Cusco is one of the most accessible cities in Peru. Holding the ancient ruins of the Inca civilization dating back to 1200 A.D, tourists come from everywhere to visit Cusco and travel through all of Peru's major cities.
The Cusco airport solidifies its importance in Peru as flights arrive and depart daily for other major Peru cities such as Puno, Arequipa, and Lima, the country's capital. By far the easiest way to travel to Cusco, flights leave daily from all three cities and last two hours at the most.
Dating back in time, land travel was of the utmost importance to the Incas and today still remains a crucial avenue to explore the ancient city. For the traveler who loves adventure and has time to really explore and enjoy the scenery of the Andes Mountain as well as the richness of the Andean culture, land travel is the way to go. Yet, land travel is only recommended for the adventurous travelers because long drives through the mountains can hold unexpected turns, narrow roads, and sharp twists along the way.
As a major, Cusco is not only a tourist attraction in and of itself, but also serves as a hub to exploring Southern Peru as well as surrounding archaeological sights. The following pages highlight air travel to Cusco, but are easily reversible to accommodate those visitors using Cusco as the first stop on their journey.
