The Ferrocarril Central Andino railway line runs from Estacion Desamparado in Lima to Huancayo, and climbing from sea level to 4829m, the second-highest point for passenger trains in the world. The trip is fascinating as the train weaves through tunnels, bridges, and passes by gorgeous altiplano scenery.

The main artery out of Lima is the Carretera Panamericana, which runs northwest along the coast. There is no central bus terminal. Each bus company has its own terminal, but unfortunately most are in dangerous neighborhoods. It is recommended that you buy your tickets in advance and take a taxi to the terminal.
