Trains from Cusco to Machu Picchu
Most people that visit Peru will take the train to Machu Picchu from Cusco. Depending on your budget, there are luxury, standard, and backpacker style trains that take you through stunning scenery.
While the Inca Trail allows for more exploration of the Sacred Valley, the train trip is significantly less demanding, while offering beautiful views of the surroundings. If you plan to travel by train at peak times make sure to book your seat a few months in advance. The busy season in Peru is May through September.
Trains to Machu Picchu
There are several different types of trains to choose from. The most expensive option is the Hiram Bingham, a luxury train service that departs from the Poroy Station. The four cars feature elegant décor, entertainment, meals, wine, bus transfers, entrance to the ruins, and afternoon tea at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. The Vistadome is not as pricey and has the quickest route to the ruins. Some perks are the snacks and refreshments that are included and the all glass sides that allow for great views. The cheapest, but not as comfortable, is the Backpacker train. It's not as glamorous, but if you're on a budget it will get you there.
The route runs from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, making some stops along the way. Different trains make different stops depending on times and classes of service.
All the trains are operated by PeruRail, the national railway.
