Since Manu is situated away from civilization, it is impossible to reach strictly by land travel. The Manu River provides access by water, but must be first reached by bus travel. Boca Manu, an area in the lowlands does have an airport and flights leave from Cusco. In fact, there are only two main ways to get into Manu.


Planes leave Cusco and fly a duration of 35 to 45 minutes via plane, landing in the Boca Manu airport, deep in the Manu lowlands. From there, with the help of a guide, visitors are navigated 90 miles down the Madre de Dios River by canoe to reach the main and navigate 90 minutes down the Madre de Dios River by motorized canoe to reach the most recognized and praised lodge in the area, The Manu Wildlife Center (labeled in pink on the map). Flights leave daily from Cusco, but are subject to the weather. Due to the rainforest's location and climate, rainfall is frequent thus making high winds and heave rainfall a huge factor in flight departure time and delays.


Typically to get to any of the other lodges, visitors take a bus from Cusco to their selected destination. The Cock of the Rock lodge, although not very close to the Boca Manu airport, offers visitors who seek a scenic tour the perfect opportunity to not only see rainforest wildlife, but also the opportunity to see the upper portion of the cloud forest as well as pieces of the Andean chain. The trip from Cusco to the center of the lodges, particularly the Cock of the Rock lodge is a 110-mile journey that usually lasts between 8 and 9 hours. If guided on the trip, which is highly recommended, the trip usually stops at a few Andean towns and allows for time to wander through the cloud forest, which is a natural wonder. The cloud forest contains the most exotic and incredible bird watching opportunities and provides scenic beauty that leaves visitors in awe. Also on the trail through the cloud forest, visitors will pass through the burial chambers of the Pre-Incan tribes, accenting the cultural value of the rainforest amongst the natural beauty.
