The Sacred Valley of the Incas

The Pisac Ruins in the Sacred Valley of Peru The Sacred Valley of the Incas was the center of the vast Incan Empire. This fertile land with an excellent climate has been a major agricultural region for thousands of years. The extensive ruins stretch from the villages of Pisac to Ollantaytambo, and in the north end of the narrow valley, the citadel of Machu Picchu. Flanked by the Urubamba and Vilcanoca Rivers, the beautiful landscape of the Sacred Valley is also home to Quechan descendants who still maintain the same customs and rites of their ancestors.

Sacred Valley History

The Incas enjoyed many years of peace and prosperity, especially since the rugged landscape of the Andes provided protection against the savage jungle tribes. The Spaniards proved to be the biggest threat. Manco Inca led the Great Rebellion in 1536, the last battle before the fortress of Sacsayhuaman and all of Peru was taken over by the Spanish. The Incas were able to hold off the enemy for ten months and according to historians, if they had won this battle, the Incas may have been able to save the empire.

Sacred Valley Highlights

Most villages in the valley have Incan ruins which are proof to the prosperity and growth of the ancient empire. The intricate fortresses and agricultural terraces that are still in use are amazing examples of the masterful craftsmanship of ancient construction.

In the center of the Sacred Valley halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu is Chinchero, which was a popular country resort for Inca royalty. It's easy to see why, with the gorgeous views of the snow-capped mountains and nearby river. Further on the Inca Trail on the bank of the Urubamba River about 20 miles from Cusco is Pisac, a lovely village with ancient ritual baths fed by aqueducts and one of the largest known Incan cemeteries. The precision of the stonework is even more amazing than the ruins at Machu Picchu.

From Pisac you'll pass through the Yucay village to Urubamba at the center of the valley. This peaceful and lovely village is a favorite spot for travelers on their way to Machu Picchu. The last stop before Machu Picchu is the great fortress of Ollantaytambo, which is almost as large, and finally, the temple of all sacred temples, the citadel of Machu Picchu.

Sacred Valley Lodging

Pisac is a great base for exploring the valley with a number of hostels to spend the night. Urubamba also has a range of lodging options, from cheap to very expensive. The rustic Sol y Luna Hotel is located 2km from Urubamba and offers Indian style luxury accommodations.
