Huanchaco

The boats on the beach at Huanchaco Huanchaco, Peru represents a laid-back town where the inhabitants hold customs that have been in place for centuries. Once an important port for the Incan civilization, modern day inhabitants have incorporated historical values into to their daily lives.

The Huanchaco beach boasts many of the activities of life in beautiful Huanchaco. In this village dominated by its flourishing fishing industry, the fisherman today use traditional reed boats from over 1,000 years ago, known as "little totora horses." The name is said to come from how the boats are ridden, with the fisherman kneeling on top of the boat as opposed to sitting inside of it, similar to a surf board today. This same boat design is depicted in artwork shown upon the walls of various Huacas built during the rule of the Moche civilization. The material totora is a light-colored twig plant that is found mostly in lagoons. The plants are malleable and are shaped and laid together to create these boats, which usually measure about 3-4 meters in length.

The local surfers are also predominant in Huanchaco, where tourists are invited to have a try at the waves. Travel is recommended mostly between December and April when the ocean's temperature is most suitable for swimming. Within Huanchaco, visitors may enjoy the small Baroque church upon a cliff which is said to have given the fisherman of long ago a direction home, the seafood restaurants, and the open-air market where locals sell their crafts.
