Trujillo Overview

Background
Trujillo, Peru has developed into a city marked as a center for numerous agricultural and commercial industries, making the city an important economic landmark. Trujillo is also located upon the site of two major ancient civilizations, the Moche and Chimu, where artifacts of these groups attract visitors year round. Trujillo is also known for its manifestation of much of the Peruvian culture in its people, traditions, and daily practices.
History
Trujillo was founded in 1534 by the Spanish conquerors who had defeated the Inca empire around that time. Yet the land that Trujillo now lays on holds history that dates back much farther. The Moche civilization, now often referred to as the Moche or Early Chimu, existed in northern Peru until about the 8th century. The Moche created gorgeous ceramics depicting scenes of life during that time, which have survived along with some of the impressive archaeological sites of the area.
From the Moche civilization, the Chimu culture eventually emerged. The Chimu are most known for the capital city, known as Chan Chan (Sun Sun), constructed of mud bricks beginning in the 9th century. Because of this composition material, the Chimor were able to create intricate decorations on the sides of their buildings, depicting people, animals, and activities of life during this time.

Due to the amazing history of this area, and the modern-day remnants that serve as a reminder of it, tourism has become a major facet of this area. Historical landmarks such as the mud city of Chan-Chan and the Plaza de Armas used during the times of the Inca civilization, are key attractions of the area. The history of the land and the numerous artifacts held in the local museums provide visitors with a glimpse into life during these ancient times. Trujillo also offers the experience of a resort town with the Huanchaco beach nearby, popular for surfing and fishing.
