Valor defeats Peru State in four sets


(Peru, Neb.) – On Saturday, October 9, Evangel University won over Peru State College 3-1 to move to 13-9 overall and 5-5 at the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The ‘Cats fell to 3-21 on aggregate and 1-9 in conference.

In the first set, Valor was in control as they scored the first six points of the set before an error on Evangel gave the Bobcats the 6-1 serve.

The Valor would go on a 2-0 run ahead of Alexandria Chavarria (Hollister, California) would get a kill on the set of Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Missouri) to cut the advance of Evangel 8-2. The State of Peru would earn consecutive aces in the service of Sidney peck (Manitoba, Canada) to bring the ‘Cats to less than four points because they would still be 8-4.

An attacking error would keep the ‘Cats alive as they would lag three points at 8-5. The Valor would return with a 4-0 run to regain the 12-5 lead. Evangel would not lag in the first set and would win the set by a score of 25-12.

In the second set, Peru State would be first on the board with an error on Evangel. The Valor would return immediately to tie the game at 1-1. The ‘Cats would regain the lead after killing one by Chavarria on the assist from Hannia Rios (Toa Baja, RP) because they would lead 2-1.

As the score would be tied at 2-2, the Bobcats would get a kill from Ace Swadogo (Omaha) off the Rios plateau and a service ace from Cassie davis (Colorado Springs, Colorado) lead 4-2. Peru State would continue to lead until Valor tied the game at six and again at seven.

The State of Peru would lead 8-7 after a victory of Jaddy Duarte (Brasilia, Brazil) off the Davis Plateau. Rios would extend the ‘Cats’ lead over the service ace to 9-7 in favor of the Bobcats. Five consecutive points from Evangel would put the State of Peru behind 12-9. The Valors wouldn’t give up the lead at that point as they would win the second set in a close 25-22 game.

The Valor would score the first point of the third set to lead 1-0, but the ‘Cats would strike back with a point of their own on a Haley VanLeuvan kill (Elgin, Oregon) on Birkle’s assist to tie the game at 1-1. VanLeuvan would get another kill to take the lead on Birkle Plateau again.

Evangel would tie the game at 2-2 before VanLeuvan secures his third straight win over Davis assist this time around as the Bobcats lead 3-2. All four sets would be tight as the game would be tied at four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten before Valor took a two-point lead at 12-10.

Evangel would see his lead increase by two points as he led 14-10 at this point. The State of Peru would retaliate as the game would be tied at 20-20. Once again, the score would come down to 23-23 this time around. The ‘Cats would eventually find a way to win the hotly contested 26-24 set.

In all four sets, the State of Peru will first score an error on the Valor. Evangel would come right back and score the next two points of the four sets to take a 2-1 lead. A victory for Chavarria over the pass from Rios would be 2-2.

Peru State would score two straight points to take a 4-2 lead in a VanLeuvan victory over Davis’ assist and an offensive error over Valor. Evangel would tie the game at four and again at five.

Valor would go on a 20-10 run to finish the match and end up winning all four sets of the conference match 25-15.


Peck led the team with three aces serving. Birkle added an ace to serve.

Chavarria and VanLeuvan led the team in kills with ten apiece. Swadogo added eight kills and Duarte added seven in the game.

Birkle led the team with 13 digs while Alyssa Bock (Plattsmouth) added 12. Rios also added 11 digs

Davis was tied for 20 assists, while Rios added 17 assists.

VanLeuvan added two solo blocks and two assists while Swadago finished with three assists. Dawson sharman (Sidney) added two assists in the contest.

Upcoming games

The State of Peru will be on the road again on Wednesday, October 13, as it travels to Lamoni, Iowa, to face Graceland University (1-16, 0-9).

They’ll be home this weekend for a pair of Heart contests. On Friday, they will host Mount Mercy University at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, Clarke University will be the opponent at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s game will be the annual Dig Pink game.
